I know we all have our preferences as far as undercoating goes, including color and method. Mine used to be whatever was in the back of the Guild, but I've recently started doing my undercoating by hand, for extra control, and a thinner coat, using Apple Barrel craft paints (cuz theyre cheap, and cover well). So, what do you guys use? Why?

I try to vary my colors depending on how im gonna paint the model, very light models get white, dark ones get black, and everything else gets grey. Ive found that I almost exclusively use armory paints now, they coat thin and spreads really

I always spray black. Even though as everybody know's my army is just about the brightest one next to Schwencke's, I like the black because it saves me from having to paint black into the recesses of the model like between armor plates. However, I do hand paint a coat of shadow grey onto all parts of the model that will eventually become light blue, and that's so the light blue doesn't struggle as much as it would to cover up the black.

I prime grey usually. When painting white I will more likely prime white, but sometimes grey depending on which white technique I'm using, and for one certain scheme I prime Bleached Bone... usually grey for a standard mini tho, and then I like to give the whole figure a thinned dark ink wash so I can see what I'm working with.

I have used the cheap 99 cent spray paint from Walmart since day one. It works for me. Just gotta keep the can away from the model and dust it. Take a couple of shots but it works and its thin

First: Base Color. For my Cygnar (you know the Midnight Blue ones) I use Black Primer. For my Khador, since I am doing a White with Red highlight scheme, I use White Primer. If I plan to have a "Bright" color scheme (Red, Yellow, or Bright Green) then I base with white. Anything else I base with Black for the reason that Connor/Zephyr stated.
Second: I am now using your standard "Decorator" color spray paint from my Tru-Value hardware store. It seem to have the same consistancy as the Citadel/GW paint that I was using (Chaos Black Spray) and it is about half the price ($8 for Citadel vs. $3.50 for the "Decorator"). I use the Krylon Matte Seal Coat for the finish.

Does Krylon Matte spray work well? Because I'm really sick of my Armory crap. I sprayed my stormclad when I was finished with it (10ish hours) and it ended up ghosted rawr. It's not too noticeable because I used a very this layer, but it just lost some of it's pop.
